Don’t pull the plug on the Dodgers’ playoff hopes … yet

Alex Wood might be done for the season. The lefty, the Dodgers announced Wednesday on Twitter, is undergoing something called an arthroscopic debridement of his left elbow . Sounds awful. Sounds made-up ( it's not ).In this season of cascading Dodgers disasters, though, it sounds about right. L.A. fans barely even budged when they heard the news (even the ones not parked on the 405). Even though it wasn't expected, it was expected, if you know what I mean.MORE: Ranking the 25 worst Hall of Fame selections Wood, who originally went on the DL in late May, is part of a pretty painful list of starters that manager Dave Roberts has had to cro s off his list of rotation potentials at some point this season. For a https://www.bravesedges.com/atlanta-braves/greg-maddux-jersey couple ofmonths in 2016, Clayton Kershaw was on track to author another one of the most dominating seasons by a left-hander since, well, ever. Then, he went on the disabled list July 1 with back i sues. Then, he threw a simulated game Saturday, but the pain flared up again, and nobody really knows when he'll return to the mound in the majors.Wood, who had a 3.99 ERA in 10 starts, is one of three L.A. pitchers to throw at least a couple of innings this season before ending up on the 60-day DL (Yimi Garcia and Chin-hui Tsao are the others). Hyun-jin Ryu, the poor bastard, has experienced so many roadblocks in his earnest but frustrating return to full health that he should be known simply as Setback by the fan base.Brett Anderson was supposed to be a part of the rotation, too, but he had back i sues in spring training and hasn't seen the majors yet this season (he's throwing rehab pitches now, at least). Brandon McCarthy's return https://www.bravesedges.com/atlanta-braves/tom-glavine-jersey from Tommy John surgery was an exercise in practicing patience, though he has been outstanding in three starts since finally getting back on the mound (1.69 ERA).And it's not just the rotation. For fun, let's look at all the players who have been placed on the DL by the Dodgers, starting with the day-before-opening-day moves: Andre Ethier (60-day), Mike Bolsinger (15-day), Brett Anderson (60-day), Hyun-jin Ryu (15-day), Howie Kendrick (15-day), Yasmani Grandal (15-day), Alex Guerrero (15-day), Josh Ravin (60-day), Carl Crawford (15-day), Scott Van Slyke (15-day), Yimi Garcia (60-day), Alex Wood (15-day), Yasiel Puig (15-day), Enrique Hernandez (15-day), Joc Pederson (15-day), Clayton Kershaw (15-day), Trayce Thompson (15-day), Hyun-jin Ryu (15-day, again), Casey Fien (15-day), Chris Hatcher (15-day).I mean, damn.MORE: Dodgers looking to acquire Evan Longoria? Even Jason Schmidt thinks the Dodgers are injury-prone (Probably. We didn't actually ask him). But here's the thing: The Dodgers are OK. No, really. They need the avalanche to stop avalanching, of course. They need Kershaw to avoid surgery , obviously, and return at some point. If the season ended today, though, the Dodgers would be in the postseason. They own the first wild cardby a game over the Marlins, who are a game ahead of the Mets and Cardinals https://www.bravesedges.com/atlanta-braves/babe-ruth-jersey and three up on the Pirates. They're only 4.5 games behind the Giants and their beleaguered bullpen in the NL West. And you have to remember this, too, when talking about playoff chances:The 2016 NL wild-card race will not look like the 2015 NL wild-card race. Last year, the Cubs took the second wild-card spot with 97 wins. Entering play Thursday, the Marlins own that second wild card with a .543 winning percentage, which is an 88-win pace. That bar is significantly lower. Is this Dodgers team 97-wins good? No. But they are good enough to be in the 88-wins conversation, which puts them in the mix this season. And there's this, too: They are not going to just sit idly by and do nothing. They will be active on the trade market. Aggre sive, even. Andrew Friedman and Farhan Zaidi, the primary two decision-makers in the front office, aren't going to let a team with a payroll in the $250 million range wither away. Those two are creative and motivated. And that's a big reasonwhy the Dodgers aren't done yet.
